Visit Greece

Visit Greece

In Greece, you are standing at crossroads of cultures, colours and civilisations, you feel the grandeur of history and the warmth of being at the southernmost part of Europe, you discover the evolutionary process of thought, influence and experience.

A country with a uniquely affluent historical past, inhabited by people gazing confidently and optimistically into the future.

A country that although statistically small, is huge in its diversity.

A landscape that has given us thousands of postcard images but remains incredibly vibrant and impossible to capture.

Greece is a country of beautiful contradictions, a constant journey in time, from the present to the past and back again.

Walk through the olive groves, through ancient sites. Move to clusters of sparsely inhabited islands. Roam from beaches to rocky mountains and explore the breathtaking scenery.

In Greece the fusion of images becomes more than imagery and turns into reality.

Why Travel to Greece?

Why do so many people feel drawn to Greece and why do they feel so at home once they get here?

Is it the history that draws us to Greece? The land that has given us the Acropolis and Delphi and Olympia has been attracting tourists for 200 years since the days of Lord Elgin. Could it be the Greek islands? Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, Paros, Naxos and Rhodes with their beautiful beaches, restaurants, nightlife and archaeological sites have been popular for decades. Or lesser known islands like Sifnos, Lesvos, Kea that have always been attractive to those looking for a more quiet escape. Maybe it is the allure of the Peloponessos with its high mountains and beautiful coast, its rich history and the seaports of Gythion and Napflion which have sent sailors all over the world for centuries. Could it be the Greek food? Maybe the weather in Greece where they say there are 300 days of sunshine, most of it between May and November. Maybe it is the spiritual quality of places like Meteora where centuries old monasteries crown giant rocks.

I think the reason Greece is popular is because it is somehow familiar while at the same time exotic. Whether this familiarity comes from studying the ancient Greeks in school or something deeper or more spiritual I don't know. I can't begin to count all the e-mails from people who have written that they have always had an attraction to Greece and once they had visited felt they somehow belonged there. Places were as familiar as if they had once been home. It is not chance that the slogan for the Athens 2004 Olympics was 'Welcome Home'. It was not just a homecoming for the Olympics themselves but for all those visiting the place that has much to do with who we are today. And maybe some of us once walked the streets of ancient Athens with Socrates and Plato.

For me writing about Greece is not a job. It is like a higher calling. If one's duty on earth is to awaken those around him and so awaken himself what better tool is there than Greece? For those of us who spend long hours a day working or involved in the routine of modern life Greece is an awakening. It reminds us that we are alive. I hope that my Greece Travel Guides awaken something in you that brings you back to Greece.

Museums
Greece today has more than 200 State museums or museums supervised by the Ministry of Culture, as well as 107 private museums. Here you will have the opportunity to admire unique works of art and sciences and trace over 6,000 years of history. Greek museums are classified in the following categories:
Archaeological Sites
A dense grid of archaeological sites covers the entire surface of Greece. After the foundation of the new Hellenic state, increased interest was expressed for the promotion of our national heritage. Both the Greek Archaeological Service and foreign archaeological schools (French Archaeological School, German Archaeological Institute) started excavations as early as the second half of the 19th century.
World Heritage Sites
Because of its geographical position, Greece was a crossroad of civilisations that had left their traces everywhere: the architecture of the museums and settlements, miniature art, daily life, nutritional customs and in all forms of popular art in the various regions of the country. The visitor can come into contact with this multihued and impressive mosaic through trips into historical, cultural, artistic and folkloric traditions.
Mountains
Greece is primarily a mountainous country with more than 300 larger or smaller mountains. The most significant Greek mountain axis is the Pindus Mountain range, forming the “backbone” of Mainland Greece, which extends naturally to the mountains in the Peloponnese and Crete. In addition, the majority of the islands are in fact the mountain peaks of the now submerged landmass of Aegeis, which at one time linked Mainland Greece with Asia Minor.
Lakes
There were dozens of natural and artificial lakes in Greece, as well as many lagoons. Most lakes are freshwater and have formed mainly far from the coastlines as a result of tectonic or volcanic forces, or from the melting of glaciers. Lagoons -which are shallow coastal water reservoirs connected to the sea via a wider or a narrower opening- can be converted to freshwater lakes when the inflow of saltwater from the sea is for some reason interrupted and an adequate inflow of freshwater occurs from flowing drainage basins.
Monasteries
Greek monasteries are interconnected with Greek nature and history. Located in steep rocks, cliffs, on windy slopes above the sea, lush green valleys and olive groves, these monasteries are actually witnesses of human efforts to come closer to God through silence, simplicity and harmony. Based on religious worship, miracles, built by experienced local craftsmen and decorated by remarkable religious painters.
Churches
Churches, places intended to meet the needs of Christian worshipping, are a characteristic and inseparable element of the Greek landscape. From austere, aisle-less chapels to magnificent cross-in-square types, churches follow specific architectural forms that were gradually established since the first centuries of Christianity and after. Their decoration -whether paintings, mosaic or other- always reflects Orthodox doctrine, following specific style trends and established iconographic programs.
Traditional products
Traditional Greek cuisine… a total based on the pure products from Greek Mother Nature to form a balanced nutritional model that can ensure a better quality of life and physical health. Products with unique quality and unsurpassable nutritional value, such as the olive and extra virgin oil, dairy products, honey, ouzo, fish, juices, water, nuts, wines, mastic from Chios, crocus from Kozani and many more. These have blended together and created a noble cuisine rich in nutritional ingredients, which can satisfy the high gustatory and nutritional needs of modern man.
Recipes
Greek cuisine is based on olive oil, herbs and spices. The Greeks enjoy tasty and well-cooked food. Hereunder you will find the recipes for some of the more traditional Greek dishes:
History
Today’s visitors to Greece have the opportunity to trace the “fingerprints” of Greek history from the Paleolithic Era to the Roman Period in the hundreds of archaeological sites, as well as in the archaeological museums and collections that are scattered throughout the country.
